"die Seriale - IndieSeriesFestival Giessen" is the oldest festival in Germany dedicated to present and celebrate independent web and digital series. Our goal is to connect, support and pay tribute to all talented independent creators from around the world and to advertise their wonderful work. The 3rd Annual Edition will take place between the 9th and 11th June 2017 and for the first time "die Seriale" will be open for international submissions. On three festival days lectures, workshops and panel discussions will be held. All selected series will be screened in the local cinema. The most outstanding series will be awarded by an expert jury including a cash award sponsored by the VOD platform Netfall.
"die Seriale" was launched by the two film makers, Dennis Albrecht ("Filmstadt") and Csongor Dobrotka ("Number of Silence"), on June 12th, 2015 in order to offer German-speaking independent series a platform beyond the internet, as well; to highlight their innovative nature and their extraordinary quality and to connect the series creators among each other. The exchange between the filmmakers was supposed to enhance the quality of the format and to establish new perspectives in producing and publication.
In the course of time, the definition of independent series is subject to plenty of changes. However, in most cases, webseries are independent series, also. "die Seriale" focusses on short form digital series, which are mainly produced for the internet. It is important to us that authors and directors have been able to realize their series in accordance with their vision.
The Festival Directors in 2016: Dennis Albrecht, Julian Hansmann, Csongor Dobrotka.
With the second edition of the festival on the 3rd and 4th of July 2016, Julian Hansmann joined the team as a third festival director. Owing to the cooperative partnership with the Hessen Film and Media Academy (hFMA) – the network of the thirteen Hessian colleges and universities - the framework programme was broadened in form of an "educational" with numerous lectures regarding webseries. Within the short time span of only 1.5 years, three further festivals, especially for series and webseries, have been founded in Germany, that were all guests at "die Seriale" 2016 and that cooperate from the outset. We are very happy that we can call "Webfest Berlin", "Seriencamp München" and "Wendie Webfest Hamburg" our festival partners.
In 2016, Dennis Albrecht left the organizational team of "die Seriale" for personal reasons. He is still passionate about the festival, though, as Dennis assured us.
In 2017, "die Seriale" will be an international festival for the first time. Additionally the festival will take place on three days. Meanwhile, the organizational team has extended to seven people and has grown to 15 further team members to create our biggest event so far. We are very fortunate that we have been able to enter international partnerships with "Bilbao Web Fest", "Vancouver Web Fest", "Seoul Webfest", "DC WebFest", "Roma Web Fest" and "Miami Web Fest" in the meantime. Likewise, we are happy about "die Seriale" being part of the "Web Series World Cup" (WSWC) in 2017.
